Description
Over a 34-year career with the United Nations, Victor Busuttil dealt with logistics for peacekeeping missions, labour relations, and chief executive assignments. In New York, he served as secretary of the UN Secretary-General’s advisory body on staff-management relations and was entrusted with politically sensitive related issues. The bulk of his career was spent in Geneva at UNCTAD (UN Trade and Development), one of five bodies reporting directly to the General Assembly in its own right and was responsible for addressing and servicing the General Assembly’s principal review bodies. Upon retiring as a senior director, he was second in the UNCTAD hierarchy to the UNCTAD head. His UN years included working closely with two future Nobel Prize winners, both of whom contributed to his career, as well as with two alleged Russian spies. On his return to Malta, the Prime Minister appointed him to the Board of Directors of the Central Bank of Malta, where he served for ten years and chaired the Bank’s Audit Committee throughout that period.
In Vinegar Vic, A Mediterranean Man at the UN, the author delves also into history, religion, and humour.
